Introducing Monty
« on: December 22, 2017, 08:29:40 PM »
Monty is my 2.1/2 year old English Springer Spaniel. He is a very big boy and I get a lot of people asking me what breed he is because he is very tall for an ESS. He stands 24" to his shoulders and weighs 23kg.
Im not that bothered about the question (he's my boy and I love him to bits) but would love to know what my fellow ESS owners have to say.

I say, hello Monty!  You sound very handsome to me.   ;)

Springers vary quite considerably in size, depending on their breeding, and some come up really petite whilst others are quite tall.  As long as he is not too plump and you can see his waist and feel his ribs then I really wouldn't worry.
Harvey is show-bred and people often comment on his height, though I don't think he's as tall as your Monty.

Sam was same height & 32kg but very squarely built, got the same questions as you, but he was full bred. Harry at 18 months is about 22 inches and 25kg ,bet Monty like Sam has long legs, Sam got his name from Lord of the Rings character, a friend remarked the size of his paws, a line that is echoed to Samwise in the movie. who cares what people think, he's your bud, that's that, welcome aboard

Hi and welcome to you both!

I've got a bitch that was a similar weight and height in her prime - she's 13 and a half now so nowhere near so heavy and seems to have shrunk a bit too.  They do vary a lot, especially the working lines.
